Loading boxes into a moving truck

Check the space your planned load may need.

Choose rough, inventory, or manually entered volume and compare it with common truck and portable-container sizes. Review the reserve space and look for a comfortable planning margin.

If the fit is close, check missing items and discuss the actual vehicle or a revised plan with your mover or rental provider.

Will the planned load have room to spare, or is the fit getting close? Truck Capacity compares a selected load volume with common truck and portable-container sizes. Use it to spot a tight fit early and decide what to review with your mover or rental provider.

Select the load and compare

  1. On Truck Capacity, choose Total Volume Source.
  2. Select Pre-Inventory for rough volume, Inventory for room inventory, or Manual for a volume entered in Manual Total Volume CuFt.
  3. Check Selected Total Volume CuFt and Your Load in CuFt before reading the chart.
  4. Review Reserve Space Percent, compare Your Load with Safe Capacity, and read Capacity Advise as a planning aid.
  5. If fit is close, review missing or unusual items and discuss a larger truck, another trip, or a revised plan.

Choose the right volume source

  • Pre-Inventory uses the rough volume available from Quick Estimates. Check its assumptions before using it to plan a vehicle.
  • Inventory uses the recorded room inventory. Review Room Summary first so missing rooms or duplicate entries do not distort the comparison.
  • Manual uses the volume you enter in Manual Total Volume CuFt. Use this when you already have a suitable cubic-foot volume to compare.

CuFt means cubic feet. The selected volume should describe the contents being moved, not the floor area of the home or the vehicle’s stated length.

This source selection is independent of Estimate Basis on Quick Estimates. Adding inventory or changing that basis does not select Inventory here. Check Selected Total Volume CuFt after every source change.

Read the comparison

The chart shows Your Load in blue and planning capacity in orange. Use labels and values as well as color. A load below planning capacity suggests room to spare; a load near or above it needs review.

Raw Volume Capacity describes the reference volume before reserve space. Safe Capacity allows for the selected reserve. Review Reserve Space Percent rather than treating every cubic foot of the vehicle as usable loading space.

Shapes, fragile pieces, equipment, loading order, and the actual vehicle still affect fit. The comparison is a planning guide, not a guarantee that everything will fit.

For example, when the selected load nearly reaches capacity, check the inventory before promising a one-trip move. Better source information can change the comparison.

When the fit looks close

Check closets, storage areas, completed boxes, and custom-item volumes. If the inventory is still partial, finish it before relying on the result. Then discuss the actual vehicle, a larger size, another trip, or a revised loading plan with the provider.

Save the move after updating the inventory or selected load. Return to Quick Estimates if the plan also changes the work, crew, or travel assumptions.
